One Journey
— The Story of Sarutahiko Ōkami and Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto —
Japan has passed down many stories through the centuries.
Among them is a story of two deities from different worlds who met and began walking the same path together.
Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto was a deity of Takama-ga-hara, the Plain of High Heaven.
In Japanese mythology, when Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, hid herself inside the Heavenly Rock Cave and the world was plunged into darkness, Ame-no-Uzume performed a dance before the cave. Her dance became the turning point that led Amaterasu to emerge once again, restoring light to the world.
Sarutahiko Ōkami, on the other hand, was a deity of the earthly realm.
When Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu, descended from heaven to earth, Sarutahiko served as his guide. Because of this, he has long been revered as the deity who opens the way for new beginnings.
According to the mythology, after fulfilling this role, Ame-no-Uzume accompanied Sarutahiko to Ise, where they began their life together as husband and wife.
Today, this story is sometimes described as Japan's first "international marriage."
Of course, the idea of a "nation" was very different in the world of mythology.
Rather than a marriage between two countries, it symbolizes the meeting of two different realms—heaven and earth.
Perhaps this is why the story has endured for centuries.
It reminds us that when people from different backgrounds meet, they can create a new path together.
Travel often introduces us to cultures that are different from our own.
Languages, customs, and ways of thinking may vary.
Yet those differences do not always create distance.
Sometimes, they become the beginning of deeper understanding and lasting connections.
For more than two thousand years, Japan has preserved this idea through its mythology.
Today, Sarutahiko Shrine and Sarume Shrine in Ise continue to quietly carry that story forward.
They are places that cannot be described simply as shrines for good fortune or relationships.
It is a story of different worlds meeting and beginning to walk a single path together.
Far from being a story of the distant past, it still quietly speaks to those of us living today.
Every place holds a story.
And sometimes, those stories quietly become part of our own.
