Hanabie — A Quiet Chill Within Spring

  • 5 時間前

As spring arrives and cherry blossoms begin to bloom, there are days when the air suddenly feels as if winter has returned.

In Japan, this kind of chill is called hanabie.

It describes the cold that comes during the time when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.

The flowers are open, yet the air remains cool.A light coat may not feel quite enough.

Today, after several warmer days, the temperature dropped again. This morning, it reached minus two degrees.

And yet, this cold does not push spring away.

Rather, it feels like a quiet trace of winter still lingering within the season.

In Japanese, there are many words that gently accept these subtle changes in nature.

A sudden chill before the warmth fully settles.A moment when the season has not completely arrived.

Instead of resisting it,there is a way of giving it a name and allowing it to exist as it is.

The word hanabie carries this quiet awareness.

Cherry blossoms in full bloom are, of course, beautiful. But there is a different kind of calm when they are seen in slightly cold air.

People walk with their shoulders drawn in,while the blossoms continue to bloom as if nothing has changed.

Spring is not only warmth.

The slightly cold days that come before it fully settlesare also part of the season.

If you visit Japan during this time of year, try looking up at the blossoms in the cool air.

You may find beauty not in a completed spring, but in a season gently on its way.
